Davidic aspirations ran high among the Jews of the first century, fueling a parade of Davidic contenders for the messianic throne. This misplaced messianic fervor proved to be a catalyst to rebellion and insurrection against the Roman super-state, bringing on harsh reprisals and the eventual destruction of Jerusalem and its Temple in 70 CE.
